Island Treasure on Jekyll Island

The annual hide-and-seek adventure...

In the early 1900s, east coast fishermen used hollow glass balls, or floats, on their nets as markers. Occasionally, the floats would break loose and wash ashore for lucky beachcombers to find and keep. Collecting these rare, highly sought-after glass floats became a hobby in the 1950s.

Today, Jekyll Island hand-picks artists from across the country to create one-of-a-kind glass floats for its annual Island Treasures event. The glass floats are part of a hide-and-seek style game played on Jekyll Island throughout January and February. Each day, volunteers called Beach Buddies will hide clear globes around the island for lucky guests to find and redeem for a real glass float. Gather your friends and family to search for globes that can be exchanged for dazzling handcrafted glass floats.

Tips for Exploring

Beach Buddies hide clear, plastic globes each day across the island in common areas, like the ones mentioned on the map below.

IMPORTANT!

While exploring Jekyll Island, keep in mind that you will not find Island Treasures in beach dunes, marsh areas, residential properties, or golf courses. Entering these areas could be illegal and unsafe.

Easier to hold, still easy to find!

In 2025, we’re excited to introduce a small change that makes a big difference. The plastic floats are now slightly smaller, making them even easier to hold and carry while still keeping the fun and thrill of Island Treasures alive.

Frequently Asked Questions

An Island Treasure is a glass float similar to the ones fishermen used to mark their nets in the early 1900s. Today, they are one-of-a-kind, hand-blown glass balls created by artists commissioned by Jekyll Island from around the country. The floats are part of a hide-and-seek style game played on Jekyll Island throughout January and February. Each day, volunteers called Beach Buddies hide clear globes around the island for lucky guests to find and redeem for a real glass float.

Jekyll Island Authority staff volunteer in a lottery drawing to become one of our “Beach Buddies” who hide the treasures each year. They receive training before the annual event, their identity is a secret, and they’re very sneaky! We kindly ask that for both the safety of our Beach Buddies and to ensure this special event is fair for everyone, please DO NOT FOLLOW Jekyll Island Authority employees or someone who you think might be hiding a plastic globe.

Nothing! The Jekyll Island Treasures hunt is free. Please note, there is a parking fee to get on the island, as it is a state park.

Congratulations! Take your globe to the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday. There, you’ll exchange it for the Island Treasure that matches the numbered tag in your plastic globe. You will complete a claim form, provide photo ID, and receive your Island Treasure. A photo ID is required to claim an Island Treasure. Only one Island Treasure can be claimed per household, per year.

The goal is to allow as many guests as possible to enjoy the hunt. With this in mind, only one Island Treasure may be claimed per household, per year.

Approximately 200 clear, plastic globes will be hidden from January 1- February 29. Each plastic globe represents a real Island Treasure. To receive your Island Treasure, turn your plastic globe in at the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center, open daily. Monday-Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

In general, two (2) to four (4) globes can be hidden per day, however there could be more on the island at any given time, based on the number of Island Treasures that have been found.

Any time. Beach Buddies will hide plastic globes throughout the day, and the timeframes vary daily. This is a very difficult task for a Beach Buddy, as they have to navigate finding a spot while avoiding the many visitors on the island. We kindly ask that for both the safety of our Beach Buddies and to ensure this special event is fair for everyone, please DO NOT FOLLOW Jekyll Island Authority employees or someone who you think might be hiding a plastic globe.

Island Treasures runs January 1 through February 28.

While all Island Treasures will be hidden by February 28, there may still be some left to find after this date. If you find a plastic globe after February 28, you can turn it into the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center through March 9 to receive your one-of-a-kind glass float. After March 9, no plastic globes can be redeemed for an Island Treasure.

All over Jekyll Island! Ok, not the WHOLE island… You will ONLY find them in common areas like the Beach Village, Historic District, Great Dunes Beach Park, etc. The plastic globes are “hidden” in plain sight and NEVER off-the-beaten-path. Globes will NEVER be hidden in the dunes, the marsh, off established paths, on the golf courses or driving range, or on residential property.

Even better question! You won’t find them in the dunes, the marsh, off established paths, on the golf courses or driving range, or on residential property. Beach Buddies always “hide” plastic globes in common areas, in plain sight.

No, Island Treasures is really about being at the right place at the right time. It comes down to luck and timing. Whether you find a globe or not, we hope you’ll enjoy the real treasure that is Jekyll Island and see the annual tradition as an opportunity to explore.

Yes! Official Jekyll Island Treasures are for sale at the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center. You can also purchase Island Treasures online for convenience.

In an effort to increase efficiency when someone comes to pick up their numbered Island Treasure, they are boxed and ready to go.

Sunday, March 9 by close of business is the last day to redeem a plastic globe for an Island Treasure at the Guest Information Center.

Since plastic globes are hidden every day until February 28, an accurate count cannot be given since some globes may have been found, but not redeemed.

The plastic globes have never been hidden in a specific order. No matter what number globe has been redeemed, the plastic globes are hidden every day until the end of Island Treasures on February 28.

Find a plastic globe?

Bring your plastic globe to the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center to exchange for your Island Treasure.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival takes place on Jekyll Island, Georgia in the National Historic Landmark District.

If you’re staying on-island, many of the hotels offer shuttles directly to the festival entrance. If you’re staying off-island please read our parking information.

Yes! There are three airports near Jekyll Island.

There are multiple hotels on the island, as well as private home rentals. We recommend you plan ahead because hotels & rental properties fill up fast. There are also multiple hotels located off-island that are just a short 15 to 20-minute drive to the festival.

Admission for the Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival is free. However, the Jekyll Island parking fee will be increased during this event. The fee is an additional $5 per daily/weekly pass; annual passes are not impacted. For additional information on the fee increase, please visit Park Entry & Parking Passes. Additionally, some special events and experiences within the festival may come with a cost.

No! Shrimp & Grits is very family-friendly. There’s something for everyone at the festival, from ages 6 to 96.

Dedicated accessible parking is located at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Guests must show the attendant a government-issued parking placard or license plate for entry. The shuttle bus fleet includes accessible buses & attendants. All restrooms at the Festival include accessible locations.

With 45,000+ attendees, walking is the best way to navigate within the Festival. Keep in mind the festival grounds cover 32 acres, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Shuttles from the Airport drop off at the Mosaic Museum, across the street from the Artists Market area.

ATMs will be conveniently located throughout the festival.

A First Aid station and Jekyll Island EMTs will be on-site all weekend.

Any lost visitor seeking to find your party can meet at the First Aid Station.

Please check with the Information Tent to see if your lost item was turned in.

We encourage you to leave your pets at home. Pathways can be crowded with 45,000+ attendees and not everyone is comfortable around dogs or other pets.

Restrooms are located throughout the festival. Specifically, outside the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, outside The Wharf restrooms, behind Doc’s Snack Shop, Morgan Center lot, behind Cotton & Copper on Pier Rd., and at both Mosaic & the Jekyll Island Airport for shuttle bus pick-up & drop-off.

We expect beautiful weather; however, the festival is a rain or shine event.

A variety of food of all sorts, including shrimp & grits, and drinks will be available on-site.

Here’s what we recommend: hats, sunglasses, comfortable walking/dancing shoes, a good attitude, sunblock, and bug repellent. Prohibited items:

  • No illegal substances
  • No drugs/drug paraphernalia
  • No e-cigarettes or vapes
  • No pets (excluding service animals)
  • No outside food or drink
  • No large chains / spiked jewelry
  • No balloons, balls, inflatables, Frisbees, etc.
  • No tents or large umbrellas
  • No aerosol cans
  • No laser pointers
  • No drones

No. Unfortunately, as much as we love drones, we cannot allow them to buzz around at the festival. When you combine large groups of people and flying robots with rapidly spinning blades, the likelihood of something ugly happening increases exponentially.

State law prohibits Jekyll Island Authority (JIA) from allowing a candidate to use JIA property or participate in JIA-sanctioned events for the purpose of campaigning for office.

While the festival will have several areas dedicated for seating, you are welcome to bring your own folding chairs. Small, soft coolers that fit on a shoulder are also ok to bring but please know that any large coolers, wagons, chairs or other items that cannot easily be carried on to the bus and held in your seat with you, will not be permitted and will need to be taken back to your vehicle

Additional information can be found in one of the Information Tents at the festival.
